"Jon first got involved with Warrington RUFC when he brought his son Will down to summer training in the U9s 13 years ago. Jon and Will, who he generally referred to as “Pretty Boy” in rugby related conversations, quickly became integral parts of the team - Will rapidly establishing himself as our first choice fly half on the pitch whilst his dad established himself as an outgoing and humorous presence on the touchline.
Over time Jon became more involved with the team, initially running touch before attending refereeing courses and eventually graduating to officiating first his own age group’s games and then more latterly would referee games for others, including the end of season inter age group Sevens that have become a fixture of the WRUFC season.
Refereeing gave Jon a natural outlet for his effervescent character and no game was ever made less exciting through him holding the whistle. Our back row in particular loved Jon’s penchant for pinging the tackled player for holding onto the ball on the floor, and our Coach, Alwyn Hughes could be relied upon to comment vocally on the quality of his decision making more generally.
In this, and his general support for the coaches, Jon was the parent that every team needs. Someone who would get involved, go out of their way to help and advise, and do it all with a positivity and good humour that was infectious. Jon will be greatly missed by the many people who came to know him, both in our team and at the club more generally, where characteristically he became more involved as our lads graduated from the senior colts and moved on to their next adventures. WRUFC is poorer for his passing".
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. We invite all members of the club and community at Warrington RUFC to come together to honour Jon's
memory.
With heartfelt condolences to wife Sara and family
