Welfare and Safeguarding 2 of 5

2. Safeguarding

The Club Safeguarding Officer (CSO) is Nick Stafford. Nick played at the club for many years and now has a son in the Minis. He has an enhanced DBS check and has undertaken both the RFU Play It Safe training for coaches/volunteers and the RFU In Touch training for Safeguarding Officers. Nick is also a first aider and happens to be the Club Secretary.

The main purpose of the CSO is to act as a point of contact for both Mini and Junior sections of the Club in all issues relating to the welfare and safeguarding of young people and to set a culture in which the club provides a safe environment for children to play and enjoy rugby. This can range from ensuring our volunteers have been DBS checked to ensuring those who participate in rugby activities at the club (including spectators) uphold our codes of conduct.

The club has a Welfare and Safeguarding team which supports Nick in this role, including:

  • Assistant Safeguarding Officer Richard Hughes. Richard played rugby for many years at the club, and has recently retired as a teacher, in which capacity he spent 17 years as the Safeguarding lead.
  • Assistant Safeguarding Officer Fiona Kellett. Fiona is the Club Physio and heads up the First Aid side of things, as well as supporting the protection of any young/vulnerable adults that play in the senior teams.

The club also has a Welfare and Safeguarding Sub Committee, which Nick chairs, which oversees the implementation of our policies and procedures, and which reviews the issues and concerns raised at the club.
